A deadly assault by armed bandits on the farming community of Binnari in Taraba State has left 62 people dead, over 5,000 displaced, and residents pleading for urgent government intervention and security protection.

A devastating raid by armed bandits on the rural community of Binnari in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State has left 62 people dead, 52 injured, and thousands displaced. The violent assault, which took place on Friday, October 23, 2026, disrupted a bustling market day, destroying homes, livelihoods, and properties across the agrarian settlement.

According to preliminary figures released by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) following an assessment by the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA), the attack affected 7,123 individuals while displacing 5,187 residents. Survivors recounted harrowing tales of fleeing for safety, with some tragically drowning while attempting to cross a local river to escape the gunfire.

What were the immediate impacts of the tragedy on residents?

The assault paralyzed economic activities in a community heavily reliant on farming, fishing, livestock rearing, and cross-border trade. Residents reported that the attackers stole livestock, burnt properties, and looted stores, completely wiping out years of hard-earned investments.

Ezekiel Salihu, a local resident, described the sudden chaos that turned a routine trading day into a scene of carnage. "Bandits came into our town on Friday when everyone was buying and selling. People were going about their daily trading activities when the attackers came and started killing people and destroying properties," Salihu stated, while calling on Governor Agbu Kefas and security agencies to deploy security personnel to restore normalcy.

Maryam Abbas, another survivor who works as a food vendor, farmer, and fisherwoman, lamented the total loss of her means of livelihood. "We have nothing left because we lost everything, but we are begging the government to help us. We want to live without the fear of being attacked," she said.

What measures are authorities taking to address the crisis?

In response to the escalating violence, Governor Agbu Kefas condemned the massacre and ordered security forces to track down the perpetrators. The state government extended Karim-Lamido's designation as an area of special security concern for an additional six months while coordinating the distribution of emergency relief materials to displaced families.

Meanwhile, humanitarian agencies are monitoring the situation to provide temporary shelter, healthcare, and food supplies to the thousands of displaced persons currently facing severe hardship.
