On Saturday, three individuals died and seven others sustained various injuries following two separate road accidents along major routes in Ogun State, according to local traffic authorities. The tragic incidents took place along the Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway and the Ota-Idiroko Road, causing temporary disruptions before emergency responders intervened to clear the pathways.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed the occurrences to the press, detailing the sequence of events for both crashes.
What caused the Sagamu-Ikorodu crash?
The initial collision took place at approximately 4:10 p.m. in the vicinity of Kam Steel along the Sagamu-Ikorodu route. A pickup van emerged from the company's access road and collided with a commercial tricycle, causing the latter to flip over.
TRACE reported that eight people were involved in this incident. A female passenger lost her life instantly, while two other women suffered injuries. Medical personnel at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu admitted the injured victims for treatment and received the deceased person's remains for the mortuary.
How did the Ota-Idiroko accident happen?
An earlier incident occurred around 3:25 p.m. at the Agarawu area near Winners Chapel along the Ota-Idiroko Road. This second crash involved a heavy-duty Howo truck and a TVS tricycle.
Authorities traced the root cause of the accident to a sudden mechanical failure in the truck's braking system. The driver consequently lost control of the vehicle, slamming directly into the moving tricycle.
"Nine people were involved in the second crash. A man and a woman died, while five others sustained injuries," Akinbiyi stated.
By the time rescue personnel reached the second location, good Samaritans had already transported the wounded victims to a medical facility. Relatives claimed one of the deceased bodies, while authorities transferred the second corpse to the General Hospital morgue in Ifo.
Following both tragedies, TRACE operatives collaborated with other sister agencies to clear wreckage from the highways and restore normal traffic movement. Agency leadership subsequently expressed condolences to the grieving families and reminded drivers across Nigeria to prioritize routine vehicle maintenance and adhere strictly to road safety regulations.
