Media personality Toke Makinwa has disclosed that she has stopped her customary practice of paying tithes to the church.
In a recent video posted on her YouTube channel, Toke explained her decision stems from the belief that numerous churches are financially well-off.
"I kind of stopped paying tithes to the church because all the churches I know are rich. And I decided that no, no, no, no, I ain’t doing this anymore. I would rather go to hospitals, widows’ homes," she articulated.
She pointed out that churches frequently receive substantial funds, including untaxed building contributions.
"All the churches I know have significant wealth. Each Sunday features a building fund envelope. They possess so much wealth, and it’s tax-free. It resembles a business, to be frank, because if that pastor dies today, either his wife or his child becomes the next pastor," she elaborated.
Despite her decision on tithes, Toke clarified that she continues to contribute offerings in church and support various church programs as needed.
However, she emphasized that her regular tithe is no longer given directly to religious organizations.
Instead, she has redirected her contributions towards charitable initiatives.
"I would rather go to hospitals, procure admission for maternity wards, and cover all the expenses there. I would choose to offer my tithe to those in dire need," she stated.
Toke also raised concerns about prioritizing church donations while individuals around her face financial hardships.
"How can I claim to love God? I have funds that someone is struggling to find for rent, yet I’m taking it to a church?" she questioned.
Reflecting on her previous charitable actions, Toke shared that she once gave her entire brand endorsement fee to the church as a form of tithe.
"Ten years ago, I was that girl who secured a brand endorsement deal, didn’t spend a kobo, and took everything to church. I said I would tithe this to God so that my life will never be tight," she recalled.
