Three individuals have tragically lost their lives, and four others are receiving treatment for critical injuries following the sudden collapse of a multi-storey shopping complex in Owode-Ede, situated within the Ede North Local Government Area of Osun State.
The disaster unfolded around 11 p.m. on Friday, trapping seven young construction workers underneath a heap of concrete and twisted metal. The victims were apprentice tilers who had journeyed from Ejigbo to undertake finishing work on the commercial property before the fatal occurrence.
According to accounts from the neighborhood, the artisans had extended their shift deep into the night. Opting for convenience, they decided to sleep on the premises to resume their tiling duties early Saturday morning. Their employer was reportedly away from the location when the building caved in.
Why did the structure fail?
Insiders indicated that the Edifice was already showing signs of distress prior to the cave-in, bringing the structural integrity of the project into sharp focus. The design was intended to feature a dozen shops spread across the upper floors, alongside two additional stores situated in the basement.
Further allegations suggest that the project lacked certified engineering oversight. Witnesses claimed that the property owner personally managed the construction process, purchased the building materials, and resided in a house located directly behind the collapsed site.
What is the current status of rescue operations?
Footage from the location depicted a flattened landscape of rubble and scattered debris as rescue teams mobilized. Personnel from the Federal Fire Service and other emergency management agencies deployed to the scene to clear the wreckage, pull out trapped victims, and evacuate the wounded to medical facilities.
While fatalities and injuries have been verified, the exact trigger of the structural failure remains undetermined. Local authorities are yet to release a comprehensive statement, and the identities of the casualties have not been officially disclosed as investigations continue.
