Tragedy struck in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where two individuals have been confirmed dead following an automotive collision at the Rumuola junction.

Local residents informed reporters that the deceased were occupants of a car returning from a night out at a club, and they may have been under the influence when the incident occurred.

According to accounts, the vehicle failed to navigate the intersection correctly, colliding as it was speeding along a road that was largely empty at the time of the accident.

A local resident shared, "They were driving fast while returning from a club. The driver did not handle the Rumuola roundabout well. The car crashed into the intersection, leading to one fatality. The second individual lost their life after attempting to retrieve something from the car and was hit by another vehicle approaching from behind."

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the occurrence of the crash, attributing it to excessive speeding.

Sector Commander of the FRSC in Rivers State, Mr. Umoh Inyang, reported that police had removed the bodies of the victims from the scene and transported them to the morgue. He stated that initial investigations revealed one vehicle rear-ended another while both were in transit.

"Our personnel were dispatched to the scene, but unfortunately, the police had already arrived on the scene to manage the situation and had transported the missed casualties. Unfortunately, two lives were lost," he recounted.

"It is important to note that neither victim died in the initial collision. One of them went back to grab an item, possibly a charger, and didn't see the oncoming vehicle, which struck him, causing his death."

Inyang urged the public to avoid excessive speeding and to allow their driving to be influenced by their surroundings. He commented on the dangers present at the Rumuola junction, which contains a sharp turn, stressing the recklessness exhibited by some drivers, particularly post-drinking at night. He emphasized that many road fatalities could be avoided by adhering to simple traffic rules.

His appeal urged individuals not to drive after drinking when heading to clubs, noting the critical importance of observing traffic laws to avoid such tragic incidents in the future.

The FRSC leader also cautioned against driving while intoxicated, highlighting that many road accidents remain preventable when drivers follow safety regulations and exercise diligence.
