Former Galatasaray attacker Ümit Karan has hailed Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen as the undisputed leader of the Turkish Super Lig, following an impressive display of sportsmanship during a domestic league fixture. Karan's commendation came after Osimhen chose to hand over penalty-taking duties to a teammate in a recent match.
Galatasaray secured a comfortable 4-0 triumph over Konyaspor in the Turkish top-flight encounter, with both Osimhen and his fellow teammate registering their names on the scoresheet. The decisive moment that drew widespread acclaim occurred when the Nigerian striker opted to assist a colleague rather than chase personal scoring milestones.
What did Ümit Karan say about Victor Osimhen?
Speaking through ENO Sports, Karan emphasized the rarity of such unselfish acts among elite goalscorers who are usually driven by individual accolades.
"You're heading to the top of the goal-scoring charts, and giving the ball to Leão there is a true mark of character," Karan remarked.
Elaborating on the psychological weight of the decision, the former Galatasaray star noted that putting collective success ahead of personal glory is what separates exceptional players from the rest.
"For a striker, this is the toughest move to make. He might score his 10th goal, but he's saying, 'Let my friend win one too.' These are the moves that make a team champions," Karan added.
Concluding his remarks, the former Turkish international reiterated his admiration for the Nigerian marksman's impact on the squad since his arrival in Istanbul.
"I want to sincerely congratulate Osimhen once again; I'm applauding Osimhen, the father of this league," he stated.
