The [Zamfara State Ministry of Health](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zamfara_State) and [Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)](https://www.msf.org) have started a door‑to‑door search for possible diphtheria cases in the Gusau Local Government Area.
The initiative is intended to improve early detection, stop additional transmission and guarantee that any suspected patients are swiftly referred for care.
Health teams are moving through communities, educating residents about diphtheria signs and urging them to seek medical attention promptly.
People identified as potential cases are being directed to the designated treatment facilities, namely the [Infectious Diseases Centre (IDC)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infectious_disease) in Damba and the Primary Health Care centre in Kwata.
According to the ministry, patients and their caregivers at these centres receive free medical services, including meals, as well as thorough assessment and treatment.
The effort also focuses on bolstering infection‑prevention and control measures, upgrading health‑worker capacity and supporting actions to halt the disease’s spread in the community.
Additional attention is being given to water, sanitation and hygiene provisions at the treatment sites to promote safe infection‑prevention practices.
Dr Yusuf Abubakar Haske, Director of Public Health, praised the programme and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting public health and containing outbreaks.
The ministry and MSF have called on Gusau residents to cooperate with response teams and promptly report any suspected diphtheria cases for early assessment and appropriate treatment.
