2027 Governorship Race: Kefas, Bwacha, Tutare and 19 Others Battle for Taraba

As preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections, political rivalry intensifies in Taraba State as incumbent Governor Agbu Kefas, former Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, and former Senator Abubakar Umar Tutare emerge among 19 candidates vying for the governorship seat.

As political momentum builds toward the 2027 general elections across Nigeria, attention in Taraba State is increasingly focused on a high-stakes governorship race featuring incumbent Governor Agbu Kefas, former Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, and former Senator Abubakar Umar Tutare among 19 contenders vying for leadership under various political platforms.

With 19 governorship candidates cleared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the upcoming contest shapes up as one of the most crowded political battles in the state's recent electoral history. The political landscape has been notably reshaped by the party switch of key principals: Governor Kefas, who initially secured the 2023 mandate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has since moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC), while Bwacha, who ran under the APC previously, is now the PDP flag bearer.

How are the major contenders positioning themselves?

The shifting political alliances have introduced fresh dynamics into Taraba's traditional voting patterns, testing whether the movement of prominent politicians automatically guarantees the transfer of grassroots loyalty.

For the ruling APC, stakeholders are betting on the administration's policy achievements to secure victory across the northern, central, and southern zones of the state. APC chieftain Ismaila Abba noted that the administration's free education initiatives at basic school levels and other developmental strides would form a core part of their campaign message.

Governor Kefas expressed strong optimism that the party would sweep the polls, pointing to strong local backing for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all state legislative candidates. "The people have no doubt, and they've given all the assurance that Mr President is reaching out to them through me, and for that reason, they are going to vote for Mr President. Taraba State is for APC 100 percent," Kefas stated.

Can the opposition mount a credible challenge?

Meanwhile, the PDP faces the task of consolidating its base and rebuilding local structures following high-profile defections. Representing the opposition, former Senator Emmanuel Bwacha maintains that his party offers a viable alternative to the current administration, citing economic difficulties and governance concerns.

"Today, governance has drifted away from the people. Public service has been replaced with self-serving interests. Our vision is simple: to restore Taraba to a place where every citizen feels a sense of belonging," Bwacha remarked, expressing confidence in the PDP's prospects.

Adding further complexity to the race, former Senator Abubakar Umar Tutare is running under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) banner, presenting himself as a fresh option for electorates desiring a departure from the two dominant parties. Other political platforms, including the Accord Party represented by Professor Jerome Nyameh, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) featuring Danjuma Usman Shiddi, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress represented by Yahaya Mohammed Sani, are equally fielding candidates across the state's 16 local government areas.

Ultimately, the 2027 election in Taraba will test party infrastructure, candidate appeal, and how effectively voters evaluate governance performance in deciding the state's political future.
