President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences to Niger Republic's military leader Abdourahamane Tiani over the death of his father, Elhadji Hassane, who passed away on November 5 at the age of 110.

President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to Niger Republic's military leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, following the passing of his father, Elhadji Hassane. Mr Hassane died on Thursday, 5 November, at the age of 110. The condolence message was issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, who relayed the president's sentiments to the public.

In his message, President Tinubu said the Nigerian government and people stood in solidarity with Niger during the period of mourning. He described the passing of a father as bringing a profound and deeply personal grief, and urged General Tiani to find solace in his father's impact on the lives of others and his remarkable longevity.

Mr Tinubu further noted that the deceased left behind a legacy of faith, honour, and integrity. He prayed that Almighty Allah would grant the deceased 'Al-Jannah Firdaus' and comfort his bereaved family and loved ones.

The condolence message comes at a time when diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Niger have been strained since July 2023, when a military coup ousted the civilian government in Niger. In January 2025, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Niger's military leader has repeatedly accused Nigeria of conspiring with France to destabilise his country, including allegations that Abuja was facilitating the establishment of terrorist bases in its north-western and north-eastern regions. Nigeria has consistently rejected these accusations, insisting it remains committed to regional peace and security.
