A 23-year-old Indian doctor reportedly died by suicide following continuous conflicts with her family about their opposition to her bringing a cat home in Alwal, Hyderabad.
The unfortunate incident occurred on the evening of Friday, March 20, 2026, when the doctor, identified as T Princy, also known as Shreshtha, was by herself at home, according to reports.
Princy lived with her mother, Kusumalatha, and her grandmother.
Weeks prior, she had acquired a cat, after which she began experiencing persistent cold and cough. Her family's disapproval of the pet led to recurring arguments among them.
On the evening of the tragedy, with her mother and grandmother out, they returned to find Princy deceased, hanging from a fan in her room. Grieved family members called for help from neighbors, who then contacted the authorities.
Emergency services arrived and transported her body to the Gandhi Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.
"The mother told us that Princy had brought a pet cat into their home, and following that, she displayed symptoms of a cold and cough, which instigated frequent disagreements within the family," stated Alwal Sub-Inspector Devendra.
A case of suspicious death has been opened based on a complaint lodged by Princy's mother, officials noted.
Initial investigations suggest that familial discord might have led to this tragic incident, but the police are exploring all potential circumstances surrounding her death.
Princy had recently completed her medical studies and was in the process of preparing for her postgraduate entrance exams. Additionally, officials revealed she was applying for her medical license.
