Abia Debt Drops by ₦98.6bn As Otti Gives Updates on Nnamdi Kanu, Infrastructure

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has stated that South-East governors are quietly engaging federal authorities regarding the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. During a media chat in Umuahia, Otti also announced a significant reduction in the state's debt and highlighted new infrastructure and public health developments.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has revealed that governors from the South-East region are actively pursuing diplomatic efforts behind the scenes to secure the release of detained Indigenous People of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Governor Otti made this disclosure on Friday evening during his monthly media briefing in Umuahia, the state capital, noting that specific strategies regarding the ongoing negotiations will remain confidential.

What is the current status of Abia State finances?

During the interactive session, Otti announced a substantial decrease in the state's financial liabilities, with Abia's debt profile falling from ₦147.2 billion in the second quarter of 2023 down to ₦48.6 billion by the second quarter of 2026, marking a total reduction of ₦98.6 billion.

Addressing public queries regarding external borrowing obligations, the governor clarified that recent increases in foreign debt figures only represent drawdowns from pre-approved multilateral credit facilities. These include funding for the Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project and the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project. Otti emphasised that his administration has not engaged in any direct, unbudgeted borrowing, adding that future credit facilities will strictly target economically productive and regenerative initiatives.

What infrastructural and educational projects are ready?

Shifting focus to public infrastructure, the governor stated that the CKC water scheme located in the commercial hub of Aba is fully completed and prepared for official commissioning, promising restored public water access for local inhabitants. Additionally, he confirmed the completion of another smart school facility, raising the total number of approved smart schools across the state to 21.

Otti explained that the government is actively implementing standardisation policies across both public and private educational institutions. A newly established oversight committee has recommended various frameworks aimed at fostering healthy academic competition and raising learning standards throughout the state.

How is the administration handling housing and public health?

In land administration and housing development, Abia secured second place in the 2025/2026 Climate Governance Ranking while successfully issuing over 5,000 Certificates of Occupancy within a three-year window. Furthermore, the newly constructed housing estate in Umuahia has experienced heavy oversubscription, with official balloting processes for successful applicants scheduled to begin shortly.

Regarding public health safety, Otti confirmed that health authorities have activated proactive precautionary protocols following Nigeria's index case of Ebola, designating an isolation facility at the Modern Child Hospital. While reassuring citizens that no infections have been detected within Abia, he urged the public to maintain calm and adhere strictly to standard health guidelines.

Otti also highlighted achievements in healthcare delivery, noting that the Eye Care Management Bureau has successfully conducted over 31,000 screening exercises and performed 1,811 surgical procedures, which included 304 free cataract surgeries for vulnerable community members. He encouraged residents to utilise free screening opportunities to prevent avoidable visual impairments.

What are the plans for traders and teachers?

Addressing urban management, the governor assured that the planned relocation of commercial traders around the Isi-Gate axis in Umuahia will be implemented gradually, ensuring that displaced merchants receive viable alternative locations to protect their livelihoods.

Concluding with matters concerning public servants, Otti directed that a previously announced personal monetary gift of ₦1 billion for teachers, commemorating the 2026 World Teachers' Day, be distributed evenly among all educators across the state without discrimination based on rank or professional standing. He reiterated that the financial distribution is a personal gesture rather than an institutional government promotion scheme, while reaffirming his administration's commitment to prioritizing vital road networks based on economic viability and regional development needs.
