The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has urged the Abia State Government to initiate the second phase of redevelopment for its Permanent Orientation Camp located in Umunna, within the Bende Local Government Area of the state.
This appeal was made on Friday by the NYSC State Coordinator, Yunusa Tanimu, during the commencement of the 2026 Batch ‘A,’ Stream 2 Orientation Course for participants deployed to Abia.
Mr. Tanimu reminded Governor Alex Otti of his commitment, made during a prior NYSC event, to enhance the camp's infrastructure. He emphasized that the camp's clinic, in particular, requires modernization and updated medical equipment to adequately address the healthcare needs of the increasing number of corps members and staff.
“A safer and more conducive camp will greatly enhance the quality of the orientation course and the overall productivity of the scheme in the state,” Mr. Tanimu stated.
He further noted the urgent requirement for a functional ambulance, as the one previously supplied by the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters over a decade ago is now inoperative.
Mr. Tanimu expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for his administration's consistent support for the NYSC in Abia, including the ongoing improvements to camp facilities and prompt responses to needs.
In his response, Governor Otti pledged that his government would continue to support the scheme, ensuring the well-being of all corps members serving in Abia.
The governor, whose remarks were delivered by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Jane Maxwell-Igwe, mentioned that the rehabilitation and provision of essential infrastructure at the camp were among the initial actions taken upon assuming office.
“We have launched several human capital development initiatives aimed at supporting our young aspiring individuals across various fields, with a particular focus on ICT skills, entrepreneurship, and agriculture.
“Wherever possible, I encourage you to seize these opportunities to acquire new skills as you prepare for your post-NYSC journey,” Governor Otti advised.
The News Agency of Nigeria observed that Justice Lilian Abai, the state's Chief Judge, represented by Justice Collington Okoroafor, administered the oath of allegiance to the 1,743 corps members present.
