The Government of Abia State has launched a cashless payment system for the Green Shuttle Bus Services, marking a significant step in transforming urban transportation within the region.

Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information in Abia, made the announcement in a press release dated March 1, 2026.

“This initiative, led by the Ministry of Transportation, signifies a notable milestone in the present administration's commitment to enhancing essential public infrastructure,” Kanu stated.

He further reiterated the government’s objective of establishing a transparent, digital, and efficient transport system throughout the state.

The new Abia Connect Card, also referred to as the Abia State Card, seeks to eradicate the inconvenience that comes with cash payments, such as delays and discrepancies over change. With this advancement, passengers will experience a quick and secure boarding process using a simple tap system.

“The shift to the Abia Connect Card makes commuting straightforward and more efficient, moving away from cash transactions effortlessly,” said Kanu.

To ensure a smooth transition, the card acquisition process has been made straightforward:

3\. Users must provide their ABSSIN to acquire the card. Those wishing to generate their ABSSI independently can do so via the Abia Pay website at https://abiapay.com/create-abssin.

4\. Following card funding, which includes a minimal ₦50 top-up fee, commuters should tap their card on the payment device upon boarding, with a confirmation “Welcome” sound indicating successful payment.

5\. The card does not have an expiration date, and funds remain valid indefinitely.

The Green Shuttle Service will continue running on major intercity and intracity routes, ensuring connectivity and affordability. The intercity fares will be:

\- Aba to Umuahia: ₦800

\- Umuahia to Ohafia: ₦1000

The intra-city services in Umuahia and Aba will be flat rates of ₦150, covering key routes within both cities.

The Abia State Government encourages all commuters to seize the opportunity presented by the free card distribution. By adopting the Abia Connect Card, residents contribute to a structured, accountable, and technologically advanced public transportation system.

The overarching goal remains clear: to establish Abia State’s transport system as a benchmark of innovation, efficiency, and transparency in Nigeria. Residents are urged to acquire their cards to partake in this transformative journey toward a smarter Abia.
