Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has brought back the Osun State Security Trust Fund, citing a rise in insecurity and the financial constraints faced by government bodies. He announced the state's commitment with an initial contribution of N300 million to the fund.
Philanthropist and the governor's brother, Dr. Deji Adeleke, made a significant donation of N500 million, with various businesses also contributing financially. Governor Adeleke further revealed plans for the upcoming deployment of refurbished Armoured Personnel Carriers and new patrol vehicles.
"This administration is committed to ensuring Osun remains one of Nigeria's most secure states," Adeleke stated.
During the launch event in Osogbo on Thursday, the governor criticised the preceding administration led by Gboyega Oyetola for neglecting the security trust fund, describing its revival as long overdue. He noted that while many Nigerian states have implemented security trust funds, Osun initiated the process which was subsequently halted.
Adeleke explained, "Our government chose to reinstate this crucial initiative by updating the relevant legislation and organising today's launch. A security trust fund is essential, given the current security situation in Nigeria and within Osun State."
He added, "We are all aware of the security challenges confronting Nigeria. Public funding alone is insufficient. Therefore, governments at all levels must engage in public-private partnerships to bridge the funding gap."
"This is not a political endeavour or a self-serving policy; it is a vital measure to protect our citizens. Only a government that is irresponsible would abandon a public-private partnership model that is proving successful in states like Lagos, Kaduna, and Rivers. We represent responsible leadership focused on people-centric innovations, policies, and programmes."
"The fund is established to secure sustainable financing for advanced security infrastructure. Through this Fund, we will establish a modern Situation Room equipped with real-time CCTV surveillance. We will also continue to provide the necessary operational equipment for our security agencies."
The governor expressed gratitude to all individuals, corporate entities, and stakeholders who have shown support.
He continued, "We appreciate your positive engagement. Today, we extend an invitation for partnership to the private sector, financial institutions, development partners, professional bodies, and all Osun State indigenes."
"As a trust fund governed by law, I guarantee absolute accountability, transparency, and adherence to due process in its management."
The Secretary to the State Government and Deputy Chairman of the trust fund, Hon. Teslim Igbalaye, congratulated the governor for reactivating the fund, whose enabling law was first passed in 2012.
Several distinguished guests in attendance pledged their support for the security initiative.
