The 15th edition of the African International Film Festival commenced on November 1 under the banner 'Frames of the Future', launching with the premiere of 'Lady', a feature directed by Olive Nwosu. The opening night drew prominent figures from the creative sector to the venue for an event featuring screenings, panel discussions, and industry networking.
Marking its fifteenth iteration, the festival has consistently sought to elevate the standard of Nigerian cinema while building bridges between Hollywood and the local industry. This year's lineup featured prominent international and domestic talent, including Djimon Hounsou, Yetide Badaki, Danielle Brooks, Rita Dominic, Somkele Iyamah, and Wale Ojo.
Olive Nwosu introduced 'Lady' as an unflinching exploration of the underbelly of Lagos, centering on a female taxi driver who navigates the city transporting sex workers. The narrative follows the protagonist's aspirations to accumulate enough funds to relocate to Freetown, serving as both a literal and emotional departure from Nigeria. The film stars Tinuade Jemiseye in a breakout performance as Sugar, offering a socially conscious perspective against the backdrop of a politically charged environment.
By the second day, activities shifted to the Landmark Centre and Twin Waters for badge collection and a series of industry panels. Discussions focused on positioning African narratives for international markets and defining the multifaceted role of film production. Producer Josh Olaolu emphasized that production involves finance, organization, collaboration, and a fundamental respect for both the project and the people involved.
The afternoon featured a screening of the psychological thriller 'Bad Blood', which explores the blood transfusion doctrine of Jehovah’s Witnesses through the experiences of two couples. Shammah Agah delivered a notable performance as Vera, a character grappling with religious psychosis and volatility. The screening was followed by a question-and-answer session with the cast and crew, capping off another day of screenings and industry engagement at the festival.
