On Tuesday, the Anambra State Government launched tricycles aimed at improving mobile tuberculosis (TB) testing services across the state, coinciding with the celebration of the 2026 World Tuberculosis Day.

During the kickoff event held in Awka, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Obiageli Uchebo, stated that this initiative represents more than just a ceremonial act; it is a vital call to combat the disease.

Uchebo characterized TB as a preventable, treatable, and curable disease. She highlighted that the fight to eliminate TB necessitates a united approach from the government, community members, and various stakeholders.

Tricycles used to tell the story.

“The theme for the 2026 event, ‘Yes! We Can End TB’, highlights the importance of national governments taking responsibility for TB responses while the community and healthcare workers handle the grassroots implementation,” she explained.

She further noted that nearly two-thirds of TB cases worldwide occur in eight countries burdened by the disease, Nigeria being one of them. Africa itself bears approximately a quarter of the global TB burden, significantly influenced by the high prevalence of HIV, poverty, and malnutrition.

The health commissioner reassured residents that TB testing and treatment will continue to be free within the state, emphasizing that financial constraints would not limit access to services.

Additionally, Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, the Programme Manager for TB, Buruli Ulcer, and Leprosy Control, educated attendees about tuberculosis, its causes, and symptoms. He stressed the need for early diagnosis and care, asserting that the newly introduced tricycles would effectively enhance outreach activities, especially in challenging-to-reach areas.

According to reports by the News Agency of Nigeria, World Tuberculosis Day is commemorated annually on March 24 to heighten awareness and galvanize global efforts aimed at eradicating the disease.
