Actress Bijou Phillips finds herself back in the hospital and desperately in need of a second kidney transplant after her previous donated organ has failed.
A spokesperson for Phillips has confirmed that she is presently being treated at UCLA Health, where she has resumed dialysis while awaiting a suitable living donor match.
Phillips underwent a kidney transplant in 2017, which was made possible by a friend's donation. Unfortunately, that transplanted organ has since failed. As reported by her representative, she suffered multiple complications post- surgery, including the BK virus, which led to both cellular and antibody rejection of the kidney. Although Phillips remains in stable condition, her team has stressed that “time is of the essence” as they seek another transplant.
Phillips was born with underdeveloped kidneys and spent her first three months in a neonatal intensive care unit receiving dialysis. She has faced challenges related to kidney disease for most of her life.
Currently, she is being cared for by Dr. Anjay Rastogi at the CORE Kidney program at UCLA Health as she continues her treatment and navigates the donor process.
