Catastrophe in Plateau: 37 Lives Lost Due to Suspected Gas Leak at Mining Operation

A catastrophic event unfolded at a mining site located in Zurak, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, where 37 miners tragically lost their lives and an additional 25 were hospitalized after being exposed to carbon monoxide gas while working underground.

The disaster struck at the Solid Mining Company during the early hours of Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, many of the victims were young men, aged between 20 and 35, who were engaged in routine mining duties when they encountered the hazardous gas that had built up in insufficiently ventilated tunnels.

Eyewitnesses recounted a scene of confusion, with miners collapsing within the tunnels and coworkers urgently attempting to rescue those still alive.

Rescue teams, along with site personnel, rapidly secured the area and transported 25 injured individuals to a nearby primary health facility for medical attention.

Reports indicate that several of the injured are in critical condition.

Law enforcement sources indicated that the mining site has been fully sealed off to prevent further risks and to facilitate the investigation into the reasons behind the gas leak.
