A Catholic knight known as Sir James Louise, also called Ebube Anaedo, has publicly renounced his faith in Christianity following what he termed an unfair failure by the Catholic Church to recognize the late Ifeanyi Ubah's significant contributions towards building the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The cathedral, which is recognized as a grand and significant structure, was inaugurated on a Wednesday, attracting many notable figures from both within and beyond the state.
Reports indicate that the late senator was instrumental in initiating the cathedral project, having volunteered to oversee its construction and completing approximately 85 percent of the work prior to the arrival of a new bishop, Jonas-Benson Okoye, who took over the Nnewi Catholic Diocese in 2022. It was noted that the bishop later instructed Ubah to withdraw from the project, a decision that sparked tension among community members who felt the senator deserved acknowledgment for his considerable investment.
During the inauguration ceremony, discontent arose when Sir James Louise, dressed in his full knightly regalia, staged a protest after the mass, expressing sorrow that Ubah's name was omitted both during the speeches and in the official documentation recognizing contributors to the project.
A video that has circulated on social media depicts the emotional knight in tears, offering an apology to the late Ubah on behalf of the church, and dramatically declaring his departure from Christianity. He was observed removing his shoes and cap, symbols of his knighthood, as he made his announcement.
"Today marks my final day as a Christian. I’m finished. This is unacceptable," he stated.
"How can it be that the inauguration of this cathedral, which Ifeanyi Ubah worked so hard to build, could occur without mentioning his name? This is disgraceful. I’m done with Christianity."
The video has elicited a broad range of reactions online, with many individuals on social media condemning the Catholic Church for allegedly neglecting to honor the senator's significant role in the cathedral’s establishment.
At the time of this report, there had been no official statement or clarification provided by the Nnewi Catholic Church authorities regarding this issue.
