A tourist tragically lost his life during a brutal road rage episode in Thailand after a Swedish individual purportedly delivered a karate chop to his neck.
Alan Roger Jolliffe, a 57-year-old British-Australian from Liverpool, was riding a scooter on Prachanukro Road in Phuket on February 25 when he reportedly became embroiled in a traffic incident with Pektas Tuguy Tayyar.
Witnesses state that one of the individuals cut off the other, which sparked a heated argument between them.
CCTV footage captured the escalation of the confrontation in an adjacent alleyway at the Malin Plaza market.
A woman, believed to be Mr. Tayyar’s girlfriend, attempted to intervene between the two men.
It is alleged that Mr. Tayyar then struck Mr. Jolliffe's neck in a karate- style motion, rendering him unconscious and critically injured. Following this, Mr. Tayyar and his girlfriend reportedly left the scene.
Mr. Jolliffe was transported to Paton Hospital and subsequently shifted to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Police in the Patong district, notified of the victim's death at 11 p.m. on the same day, initiated a manhunt that culminated in Mr. Tayyar's arrest in the nearby Kathu district during the early hours of February 26.
Authorities stated that Mr. Tayyar was charged with assault leading to death and was seen with members of the Patong police following his alleged confession.
Korakrit Khankruea, the superintendent of the Patong police station, mentioned that the Australian embassy has been contacted to inform the victim's family, while Mr. Tayyar remains in custody.
"The suspect admitted to striking the victim. He was presented in court for detainment in the morning, with bail being denied," said Superintendent Khankruea.
"The investigation file has been compiled and forwarded to the relevant officer for continued legal action."
