Cross River PDP Confirms Francis Bullem as Chairman, Endorses Wike's Coalition

The Peoples Democratic Party in Cross River State has formally ratified Chief Francis Bullem as its substantive chairman following the resignation of Venatius Ikem. During a state executive meeting in Calabar, the party also pledged allegiance to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and backed his Rainbow Coalition.

The Peoples Democratic Party in Cross River State has officially endorsed Chief Francis Bullem as its substantive chairman, while also expressing strong backing for the political alignment spearheaded by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

These resolutions were reached on Thursday during a State Executive Committee gathering held at the party secretariat located in Calabar, the Cross River State capital. According to an official statement endorsed by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Mike Ojisi, the leadership formally accepted the departure of the former chairman, Mr. Venatius Ikem.

Following Ikem's exit, the committee confirmed Bullem to assume the substantive leadership role, citing adherence to Article 47, Sections 5 and 6 of the party's 2017 constitution, with subsequent amendments.

What led to the leadership transition?

The change in leadership follows the resignation of Venatius Ikem on October 16, who stepped down from his position due to internal wrangling, leadership disorganization, and divergent visions within the state chapter.

Beyond the internal restructuring, the executive body formally aligned itself with the Rainbow Coalition led by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, whom the assembly recognized as the supreme national leader of the party.

Furthermore, the state chapter raised concerns over rising intimidation and targeted attacks against members of opposition political parties during lawful civic engagements across the state. The leadership strongly denounced these security breaches, insisting that all political actors must be permitted to operate freely without fear of harassment.

The committee concluded by reaffirming its dedication to upholding constitutional guidelines and advancing the political interests of the party throughout Cross River State.
