Cultural ambassador and fashion icon Farooq Oreagba has opened up about his personal experience battling cancer, sharing how a simple hospital visit altered the course of his life.
On World Cancer Day, February 4, he revealed that on February 3, 2014—twelve years prior—he underwent a routine scan not due to any illness, but out of precaution. A week later, he received life-changing results he describes as unforgettable.
He was diagnosed with stage one multiple myeloma, which is a cancer that impacts plasma cells found in the bone marrow.
At the time, there was no known history of cancer in his family, and his youngest child was only two years old. Oreagba recounted how the diagnosis overwhelmed him, but he resolved to fight against it.
Shortly after his diagnosis, he began chemotherapy and underwent a successful stem cell transplant in August 2014. He celebrated February 4, 2015, when he was declared in complete remission, a moment he considers both symbolic and unforgettable.
However, he noted that his battle was far from over. He continued with seven more years of chemotherapy after achieving remission, bringing the total to eight years, and finally concluded his treatment in August 2022. Today, Oreagba expresses gratitude and purpose in his life, attending only routine checkups every quarter.
