The Edo State Police Command has responded to a widely shared video featuring an aide to Governor Okpebholo. In the footage, the aide, identified as a comedian named Emmanuel Eghogho, is heard making disparaging remarks about former presidential candidate Peter Obi and issuing threats to hand over any members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) found in the state to the police.
The video also captures the Edo Commissioner of Police appearing to smile while the aide made these statements, leading some observers to interpret his reaction as tacit approval.
Addressing the public on April 24, the command's spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, stated that the Commissioner of Police neither endorsed nor aligned himself with the comments made by the governor's aide. The statement emphasized that the remarks are being thoroughly examined for any potential security implications beyond what was perceived as comedic performance.
In a detailed release, the Command reiterated that the sentiments expressed by Emmanuel Eghogho are solely his own and do not represent the views or position of the Commissioner of Police or the Edo State Police Command as a whole.
CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, was described as a dedicated professional and a non- partisan officer committed to fulfilling the constitutional duties of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Command recalled its earlier call for all political parties, their supporters, and the general public to conduct their political activities in a peaceful and lawful manner, without obstruction. It reaffirmed that individuals and groups are free to pursue their legitimate political interests within the bounds of the law.
However, the Edo State Police Command issued a stern warning against any acts of violence, incitement, thuggery, or conduct that could threaten public peace and security. The statement concluded by assuring that anyone found engaging in acts that disrupt public order would face decisive legal action.
