Edo Youths Confront Police Officers, Recover Extorted Money at Auchi Checkpoint

Angry youths in Edo State have confronted security operatives along the Auchi-Aviele route, accusing them of extorting motorists and commercial motorcyclists. The daring group forced the officers to submit to a search, recovered the sum of N4,200 allegedly collected from road users, and called on the state police command to sanction the responsible commanders.

A group of angry youths in Edo State confronted police officers and local security personnel at a checkpoint along the Auchi-Aviele road, successfully recovering money allegedly extorted from motorists and commercial motorcyclists. The incident, which was captured in a widely circulated video, highlights rising tensions between citizens and security operatives over allegations of illegal road checkpoints and extortion.

According to the footage, the local youths stormed the security checkpoint to challenge the officers. Led by an unmasked youth leader, the crowd accused the personnel of routinely exploiting commercial vehicle drivers and Okada riders. Despite some of the officers being armed, the determined youths demanded to search them to retrieve the alleged bribe money.

How did the confrontation unfold?

During the face-off, the youth leader instructed his peers to search the officers thoroughly. One armed policeman raised his hands in submission while a search was conducted on his person. Another officer, suspected to be the team leader, attempted to hand his mobile phone to the youth leader to speak with an unnamed individual in a bid to de-escalate the situation. However, the youth leader rebuffed the attempt, knocked the phone away, and demanded that the security personnel vacate the area immediately alongside operatives of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN).

After forcing the security team to disperse, the youth leader addressed a gathering to explain the rationale behind their action.

"Good evening my people! We were on Auchi-Aviele road and found vigilantes and policemen mounting a roadblock here. We got information that they were extorting people so we decided to chase them from here," the youth leader stated.

What happened to the recovered funds?

The youth leader disclosed that they retrieved the cash forcefully collected from road users during the brief period the checkpoint was mounted.

"We found out that they had already collected N4,200 from bikemen and others. I'm taking this money to the Area Commander," he added.

He further called on the Edo State Commissioner of Police to investigate the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Agbede Police Station, alleging that the operatives claimed they were acting on instructions from the DPO. He also pointed fingers at the leadership of the local vigilante network, expressing outrage over the quick accumulation of funds from citizens already grappling with economic hardships.

Checkpoint extortion has remained a recurring issue across various parts of the country, frequently drawing public outcry and intervention from civil society groups and security authorities. Incidents where citizens actively resist alleged misconduct by law enforcement personnel have become more prominent with the widespread use of social media and mobile video recording.
