An associate of Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, disclosed details regarding El-Rufai's activities during his detention. According to the associate, he dedicated his time to fasting, studying religious texts, and pursuing intellectual engagements.
After his release, this associate noted that El-Rufai is now back with his family, friends, and close contacts.
The associate, identified as Bashir Garba Sufyan, announced on his X account, "Alhamdulillah, Mallam is home with his family, friends, and associates. The first thing he said was that he has been fasting since his detention until yesterday."
He continued, "He also completed the Holy Qur'an while in detention, read ten books, and wrote some as well. This reveals why he remains notable and undefeated."
Earlier reports had indicated that El-Rufai was released by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) after being in custody since February 19, 2026.
He was detained following his interrogation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he reportedly spent 48 hours being questioned.
The ICPC had charged El-Rufai with ten counts related to the alleged misappropriation of public resources and money laundering. He was presented before a Federal High Court in Kaduna, which postponed ruling on his bail application until March 31.
However, shortly after the passing of his mother in Cairo, the ICPC decided to release El-Rufai, who has consistently denied the allegations against him.
An associate confirmed to Daily Trust that El-Rufai has been set free, although he did not provide further details. Additionally, his son, Bashir El- Rufai, confirmed that his father was freed.
Prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, Governor Uba Sani, and Malam Nuhu Ribadu, expressed their condolences to El-Rufai for the loss of his mother.
Their comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some suggesting that the challenges faced by the former governor are merely a family issue among Nigeria's elite.
