Abdulrasheed Maina, who previously chaired the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Force, is currently under medical care after collapsing in Abuja.
The incident transpired on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, as he was trying to reach his office.
According to Emmanuel Ekwe, Maina's media assistant, the collapse was due to complications associated with an untreated knee injury.
Ekwe stated that this injury resulted in Maina losing his balance, leading to a fall in which he struck his head against a staircase. He was quickly attended to by medical personnel and subsequently transported to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent care.
"Dr. Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, slumped on the evening of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, while attempting to access his office premises," read the official statement.
"The incident followed complications from an untreated knee injury that caused him to lose balance and fall, resulting in contact with the staircase.
"Medical personnel present provided immediate first aid before transporting him to a private hospital in Abuja for necessary medical attention.
"Dr. Maina is currently receiving intensive medical care and remains under observation. After an initial medical assessment, one of the attending doctors suggested considering arrangements for air ambulance medical evacuation should his condition not stabilize soon.
"The family requests the public for prayers, understanding, and respect for their privacy during this challenging time. Further updates will be provided as new information arises," the statement concluded.
Maina is notably recognized for his controversial leadership as head of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms and the subsequent high-profile corruption case that followed.
In November 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja found him guilty of money laundering in connection with N2.1 billion linked to pension funds, resulting in an eight-year prison sentence.
Maina contested this conviction, but the Court of Appeal upheld the sentence in May 2023, affirming the lower court's judgment and the forfeiture of assets associated with the case.
Despite the conviction, Maina was released from the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja on February 25, 2025, after serving part of his term. The Nigerian Correctional Service indicated his release was due to statutory remission for good behavior, noting that his sentence began from his initial arrest in October 2019.
Since his release, Maina has kept a relatively low profile, yet his activities continue to attract public attention given the scale and effects of the pension scandal.
