Tragedy struck in Daffo community, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Friday, April 17, 2026, when an explosion at a filling station led to the demise of two individuals and left three others with injuries.
The incident occurred at Natty Filling Station, where an underground fuel tank reportedly exploded while welders were engaged in maintenance activities on a suspected leaking section.
Kefas Mallai, the Chairman of Community Peace Observers in Bokkos LGA, confirmed the unfortunate event to reporters in Jos. He detailed that the explosion happened as artisans attempted to repair a leak in the underground tank.
"Yes, it is true. Today, Friday, April 17, 2026, two persons d!ed and three others were injured when an underground tank at a filling station in Daffo exploded during welding maintenance,” Mallai stated.
He identified the deceased as a welder and his apprentice, who were working on the leaking part of the tank.
"The d3ad victims were a welder and his boy. They were trying to weld the leaking part of the underground tank,” he added.
Mallai further explained that the artisans had proceeded with the repair work under the assumption that the tank was safe because it did not contain fuel at the time.
"There was no fuel in the tank, so they believed it was safe. But immediately they commenced welding, the tank exploded, engulfing the area in flames and killing them instantly,” he recounted.
Three additional individuals, who were observing the repair work from nearby, sustained various injuries due to the blast.
"The injured persons were bystanders who had gathered at the scene. They have been taken to hospital and are currently receiving treatment,” Mallai noted.
He expressed regret over the incident and emphasized the need for enhanced safety protocols during maintenance operations at fuel service stations.
