Authorities found a US Coast Guard officer, Yohan Sanchez, aged 33, along with his wife, Rebeca Santos, and their two sons, 15-year-old Michael Melendez and 2-year-old Samuel Sanchez, dead in their Ocala, Florida home. The discovery was made during a welfare check on Friday night, February 7, around 10:30 PM, as announced by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, February 9.
Jackie Soto, Sanchez's mother, recounted having a conversation with her son hours before the tragedy occurred. "I cannot accept this. He was my baby," Soto expressed to Fox 35, describing their discussion as mundane, noting he was engaged in baking a cake.
Officials do not suspect foul play and believe the family may have succumbed to exposure to carbon monoxide, an odorless and lethal gas. The Sheriff’s Office stated, "Investigators believe the fatalities might be linked to carbon monoxide poisoning; however, the definitive cause of death awaits verification from the Medical Examiner’s Office." Detectives are actively pursuing the investigation regarding the tragic event.
Expressing condolences, the department stated, "Our thoughts are with their loved ones during this extremely challenging time."
Sanchez’s sister, Noel Sanchez, shared on a GoFundMe page created to assist with funeral expenses that her brother had proudly served in the Coast Guard Reserve until he retired last year.
Sendy Sanchez, the victim's brother, reported that the family’s pastor had initially visited them on Thursday, February 6, after they reportedly missed a church gathering but departed when the household seemed dark and silent. The pastor later returned on Friday, didn’t receive a response, and subsequently contacted emergency services.
Neighbors spoke positively of the family, describing them as friendly and noting they had been residents of the area for approximately 10 months. Sendy mentioned that his brother and Santos had met at a church in Massachusetts before relocating to Florida about a year ago.
Sendy emphasized their brother's strong Christian faith and dedication to family and public service, stating, "This kind of tragedy was unforeseen. We are deeply heartbroken."
Randy Osborn, an administrator at Ocala Christian Academy, commented on Michael, a ninth-grade student at the institution, indicating that he was actively involved in his church community and had been preparing to give a sermon the preceding Thursday. Faculty members praised his leadership skills and interest in biblical study, noting he appreciated playing the piano while striving to help others and serve God.
