A road traffic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has led to the deaths of six passengers and left 23 others injured, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The incident occurred near the Four Square Camp, and details were provided by the FRSC Public Relations Officer, Odunsin Afolabi, in a statement issued on Monday from Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The collision took place at approximately 11:27 AM. Afolabi reported that the response team from the Federal Road Safety Corps Ogunmakin Unit Command arrived at the scene just two minutes after the incident was reported. The vehicle involved was a trailer, registered as DAF CF 380 with the number SNA 287 XA.
In total, 29 individuals were involved in the incident, among which 23 sustained injuries, while six lost their lives.
According to Afolabi, the primary causes of the crash were fatigue and excessive speed, which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle. He also cautioned against the mixed loading of cattle alongside human passengers, noting that such practices can complicate the separation during transport and potentially lead to fatalities.
The victims were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital located at the GOFAMINT Camp in Ogunmakin, as well as to Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical treatment.
The FRSC has advised all drivers, particularly those operating commercial and heavy vehicles, to ensure their vehicles are regularly serviced and inspected. They emphasized the importance of adhering to safe speed limits, maintaining full control of vehicles while on expressways, and complying with all traffic safety regulations.
