FirstBank of Nigeria has officially partnered with prominent technology and electronics retail chain Pointek to onboard the vendor onto its digital lending platform, FirstEase, enabling flexible consumer financing options for shoppers across the country.
What is FirstEase and how does the partnership work?
FirstEase is a digital Buy-Now-Pay-Later solution designed by FirstBank to help salary earners, entrepreneurs, and professionals acquire necessary goods and settle bills through structured installment plans lasting up to 180 days. Through this collaboration, customers can visit Pointek outlets or digital platforms to purchase items such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, and home appliances using the FirstMobile or LIT App.
The official announcement was made during a press briefing held at Pointek’s corporate headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos State. Representatives from both organizations emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for consumers by providing accessible credit options without destabilizing their personal finances.
What did bank and retail executives say about the initiative?
Abednego Ugwueke, FirstBank’s Group Head for e-Business and Retail Products, noted that the institution remains dedicated to creating innovative pathways that simplify life for its customer base. According to Ugwueke, the collaboration empowers individuals to obtain required devices immediately while managing their payments in a structured, affordable manner.
Dr. Godwin Ajala, Director of Business at Pointek, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the arrangement allows Nigerians to acquire cutting-edge technology at their own pace through a convenient installment model.
Chukwuka Okonkwo, Head of Personal Banking at FirstBank, explained that the product transitions the bank's lending approach toward financing lifestyle needs directly rather than solely dispensing cash loans. Okonkwo highlighted that the financing option features a 3% interest rate for a six-month repayment window, with provisions for shorter repayment durations depending on individual preferences.
What is the broader economic context?
This development aligns with ongoing efforts within Nigeria's financial and retail sectors to expand financial inclusion and drive economic participation through responsible consumer financing. By integrating the credit facility directly into the purchasing journey via mobile applications and merchant checkouts, both companies seek to bridge the affordability gap for tech and consumer electronics in the Nigerian market.
