A suspected Boko Haram assault on the Gaya‑Sikalmi and Gaya‑Gartsanau communities in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State left at least five people dead. Three residents were shot and two more perished when an improvised explosive device exploded, while several homes and shops were set ablaze.

At least five people lost their lives after a suspected Boko Haram assault on the Gaya‑Sikalmi and Gaya‑Gartsanau communities in the early hours of Monday, 30 October 2026. The attack, which took place in the Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, involved gunfire and an improvised explosive device (IED), and resulted in the burning of several houses and commercial premises.

What happened during the attack?

Three villagers were killed by gunfire as the assailants entered the settlements. A second wave of casualties occurred when an IED – a homemade bomb designed to cause mass destruction – detonated on the main access road, killing two more people. In addition to the fatalities, numerous dwellings and business outlets were set on fire, leaving the local population in distress.

How did local authorities respond?

Dr Aliyu Saad Yerima, the chairman of Hong Local Government Area, visited the affected villages later on Monday to assess the damage and console the bereaved families. He publicly condemned the assault, stating, "We will intensify security measures and support our vigilantes, hunters and security forces to protect lives and property." Yerima pledged to boost local security by providing additional resources to community vigilantes, hunters and the police, and urged residents to stay vigilant.

The chairman also announced financial assistance to cover burial expenses for the deceased and offered prayers for the souls of the victims. He called for a united effort to combat terrorism, highlighting the need to address informants who may be aiding the attackers.

Why are the communities vulnerable?

Security analysts noted that the proximity of the villages to the Sambisa Forest – a known hideout for insurgent groups – makes them especially susceptible to raids. The forest provides militants with easy access routes into the surrounding settlements, complicating security operations.

The incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by insurgent groups in northeastern Nigeria and the challenges faced by local authorities in safeguarding remote communities.
