On Tuesday, a magistrate at the Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in the Isabo area formally charged three individuals for conspiracy, burglary, theft and receipt of stolen property after they allegedly entered Miss Bolanle Johnson’s home and took cash and valuables worth about N4.2 million.
Key facts
- The accused are Ibrahim Habeeb (25), Jamilu Ibrahim (27) and Yunusa Zangi (30).
- Prosecutor Inspector Opeyemi Lawal stated the offences occurred on 25 September at approximately 2:38 am at No 1, Ola‑Oti Street, Obasa Sabo, Abeokuta.
- The first two defendants are said to have forced entry through the ceiling and stolen N4.2 million in cash, a Redmi phone (N320,000), a Tecno Spark 20 (N320,000), two power banks (N76,000) and a gold earring (N40,000).
- Zangi is alleged to have received the stolen items, knowing they were illicitly obtained.
What charges were filed?
The court heard a four‑count charge covering conspiracy, burglary, stealing and receiving stolen property. Lawal argued that the actions violated sections 390(4 a/b), 427 and 516 of the Criminal Code (Nigeria).
How did the court respond?
Magistrate Miss O.T. Odubanjo ordered each defendant to post bail of N500,000, secured by a single surety of equal amount. She stipulated that the sureties must be registered bondsmen with the Ogun State Judiciary. The accused were remanded to Ibara Correctional Centre while their bail conditions are finalised.
What is the next step?
The matter was adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled for 18 November. The prosecution indicated that the two primary offenders were apprehended after a security guard’s patrol failed to notice them, leading to their hand‑over to police custody.
The case underscores ongoing concerns about residential security in Ogun State and the legal system’s handling of high‑value thefts.
