The Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, has apprehended five individuals suspected of involvement in the accidental death of a 14-year-old girl due to firearms discharge in Maiduguri. The tragic event took place on April 4 within the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) staff quarters.
Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for Operation HADIN KAI, announced in a statement on Monday that the arrests were made in the Ngomari district, with the assistance of the Civilian Joint Task Force. Uba detailed that the apprehended suspects are members of a vigilante escort team serving a local government chairman. They were reportedly discharging firearms into the air as part of a wedding celebration.
"This reckless action resulted in the unfortunate death of the young girl," Uba stated. The suspects, identified as Muhammad Husaini (28), Abba Jiddu (25), Abba Kolo Mohammed (20), Ali Adam (20), and Nura Mohammed (18), are currently in custody. They are slated to be transferred for legal prosecution.
Uba strongly condemned the incident, characterising it as both unprofessional and a contravention of the established regulations regarding firearm usage. He emphasized that the Civilian Joint Task Force functions solely as a support entity and is expressly forbidden from engaging in the indiscriminate discharge of weapons.
He further confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is actively underway, in conjunction with relevant authorities, to ensure that justice is properly administered.
