A distressing video captures Victoria Johnson, aged 30, reacting with incredulity, laughter, frustration, and tears during her court appearance linked to a hit-and-run crash that led to the death of an 8-year-old boy and critical injuries to a 10-year-old.

Johnson participated in her initial court session via video link on Friday, where she faced five charges tied to the incident that occurred outside Faith Baptist Church in Winter Haven, Florida, around 8:30 PM on Wednesday. The children had been crossing the road to purchase cupcakes following a church service honoring the pastor’s 50th birthday when they were struck.

The 8-year-old succumbed to his injuries, while the 10-year-old suffered a compound skull fracture, a broken femur, and a broken arm, currently in critical but stable condition at Arnold Palmer Hospital.

Throughout the hearing, Johnson exhibited various emotions, interrupting the judge as he discussed setting her bond, which totaled $100,000. At one point, she exclaimed to someone off camera, “I wasn’t even in the car,” which prompted a firm caution against discussing the case details.

Authorities noted that Johnson initially informed the police that her blue 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe had been stolen, asserting it had been loaned to someone earlier that evening. However, detectives discovered damage and missing parts during an initial search, leading to the revelation of biological matter. Afterward, Johnson confessed to having driven the vehicle herself, even though she was aware her license had been suspended, and admitted to having consumed meth before the accident.

She communicated to the officers that she could not remember whether she had collided with anyone. Following the collision, Johnson met co-defendant Charles Cory Stewart, aged 34, at a Circle K store. They went to a residence, used meth once more, and later went fishing. Johnson subsequently handed over the SUV to Stewart, mistakenly believing he had disposed of it in a lake.

As deputies were conducting their questioning with Johnson, Stewart was observed driving the Hyundai with another passenger, Mya Bass, aged 23. Both attempted to resist arrest before being taken into custody and charged with resisting law enforcement.

Johnson now faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury, tampering with evidence, filing a false police report, and driving with a suspended license. Stewart and Bass made their initial court appearances on the same day, during which their bonds were established.

A spokesperson from Polk County schools confirmed that the deceased boy was a student at Boswell Elementary. “This is an incredibly tragic day for Boswell Elementary and the wider community. He was well-liked among his peers and staff, known for his bright spirit and eagerness to assist others. We are deeply saddened by this loss and pray for all who knew and loved this young boy,” said the statement.
