Fubara Appoints New Secretary to the State Government and Chief of Staff

Just two weeks after President Bola Tinubu stepped in to help resolve the political turmoil in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced the appointment of Dr. Dagogo S.A. Wokoma as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

Dr. Wokoma takes over from Dr. Benibo Anabraba, who had been appointed shortly after Governor Fubara assumed office, which was following a period of emergency rule in the state.

According to a statement released on Thursday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Onwuka Nzeshi, the swearing-in ceremony for the new SSG is set to take place today at 2:00 p.m. at the Executive Council (Exco) Chamber, Government House in Port Harcourt.

In addition, Governor Fubara has replaced his close political associate, Hon. Edison Ehi, previously the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, with Barrister Sunny Ewule as the new Chief of Staff.

Barrister Ewule is also expected to be sworn in alongside Dr. Wokoma at the Government House today.

Ehi, who once held the position of Majority Leader in the Rivers State House of Assembly when Governor Fubara's administration began, had previously declined to propose a motion for the governor’s impeachment during the onset of the political crisis in 2023. Subsequently, he led a faction of four lawmakers who declared 27 lawmakers' seats vacant due to their alleged defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ehi later resigned from the Assembly following President Tinubu’s involvement in the conflict between Fubara and his predecessor. He was subsequently appointed as Chief of Staff.

The Governor’s spokesman stated: "The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has appointed Dr. Dagogo S.A. Wokoma as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Barrister Sunny Ewule as the Chief of Staff (CoS). Both appointments take immediate effect."

"The new appointees will be sworn in at 2:00 p.m. today, Thursday, February 26, 2026. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Exco Chamber, Government House, Port Harcourt."
