Girlguiding Orders Transgender Girls to Depart by September 6

Transgender girls are required to exit Girlguiding by September 6, following a recent policy announcement that limits membership to girls and young women. The decision stems from a ruling by the Supreme Court clarifying the definition of 'woman' in the Equality Act.

Transgender girls are mandated to leave Girlguiding by September 6, as per the latest directive issued by the organization.

This decision follows an announcement made in December, which indicated that membership would henceforth be restricted solely to girls and young women.

When the policy was revealed, Girlguiding characterized it as a "difficult decision," occurring nearly eight months after a Supreme Court ruling in April 2025. This ruling clarified that the terms "woman" and "sex" as used in the Equality Act 2010 specifically refer to biological women and biological sex.

In light of this ruling, Girlguiding stated that it engaged in extensive deliberations, sought expert legal counsel, and received feedback from senior and young members, along with its council and board of trustees.

The organization announced that transgender girls who are already members may remain until the September 6 deadline. Furthermore, any transgender girl or transgender woman currently volunteering in women-only roles must transition to positions that are open to both males and females by this date.

In its official statement, Girlguiding noted that the interval leading up to September 6 would provide affected members and their families ample time to strategize, prepare, access assistance, and determine when they feel prepared to depart.

Girlguiding caters to members aged from four to 18 years, with approximately 300,000 participants in the various groups, including Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers, in addition to around 80,000 volunteers involved.

The organization has previously stated that it does not gather information on gender identity among its members, which leaves it unable to quantify how many individuals may be impacted by the policy change.
