The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has urged residents of the state to prioritise their eye health and undergo regular screening for glaucoma to prevent vision loss that could otherwise be avoided.

Governor Fubara issued this appeal as part of his message for World Glaucoma Day, which is observed globally on March 12th, speaking from the Government House in Port Harcourt.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, the governor highlighted glaucoma as a primary cause of permanent blindness worldwide and underscored the critical role of detecting the condition early.

"I encourage everyone, especially those over 40 years of age or with a family history of vision impairment, to visit any of our numerous healthcare facilities and get their eyes checked," Fubara advised.

He reaffirmed his administration's dedication to enhancing healthcare services throughout Rivers State, including initiatives focused on promoting eye health and combating preventable blindness.

"My administration is committed to improving healthcare in Rivers State. We will continue supporting initiatives that promote eye health and reduce preventable blindness," he added.

Fubara also urged residents to take proactive measures in protecting their eyesight.

"Let’s unite for a glaucoma-free Rivers State. Protect your sight, it’s priceless. Happy World Glaucoma Day," he concluded.

World Glaucoma Day is an event dedicated to increasing awareness about glaucoma, a condition often termed the “silent thief of sight” because it can progress without noticeable symptoms until significant vision impairment has occurred.

Globally, glaucoma affects over 75 million individuals, and it is estimated that nearly half of them are unaware they have the condition.

Health professionals consistently state that early diagnosis and routine eye examinations are the most effective strategies for identifying and managing the disease before it causes permanent damage.
