The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has outlined plans to unite professional excellence with economic growth initiatives for both Nigeria and the international community.

This announcement was made at the 20th Western Zonal Accountants’ Conference held in Lagos, with the theme: 'Revitalising the Nigerian Economy for Sustainable Development: Accelerating New Frontiers,' from February 4 to 7.

Speaking at the event, Ganiyu Semiu, the 11th Western Zonal Chairman, emphasized that the conference aims to tackle the economic challenges Nigeria faces today.

He stated, 'The theme of this conference mirrors our collective desire to align professional excellence with national transformation and the realities of a changing global economy. It highlights the crucial role Chartered and Professional Accountants play as trusted advisors, maintainers of accountability, and builders of sustainable growth in public and private sectors.'

During his address, Kolawole Bisiriyu, the conference chairman, mentioned that the discussions will delve into significant topics steering the direction of the nation's future, and the outcomes will influence decision-making.

'We are not just here to network or learn; our objective is to impact the future of the nation by making informed strategic decisions,' he remarked. 'Notable global thought leaders will be among our speakers, and I am optimistic they will provide profound and applicable insights.'

Mr. Bisiriyu added, 'We find ourselves at a pivotal moment where rapid technological changes, evolving regulations, and a heightened demand for transparency are redefining the finance and accounting landscape.'

Godwin Emmanuel, the Deputy Conference Chairman, underscored ICAN's commitment to maintaining integrity while addressing Nigeria's economic challenges through its established standards and ethical practices. 'ICAN constantly revises its curriculum to align with contemporary economic needs, and the conference is a critical part of this effort, showcasing contributors who will share their insights on economic restructuring.'

He emphasized, 'ICAN is founded on objectivity. We maintain high standards across various sectors, as true sustainability cannot exist without objective reporting. While we remain flexible, our path is defined, upholding the importance of objectivity.'

Abiodun Adedeji, the conference adviser, discussed ICAN's integration of technology into its framework, noting that ICT training, including areas like AI and blockchain, is essential to the institute’s competency development.

He remarked, 'The emphasis on technology and integrity strengthens the credibility needed to foster the confidence that Nigeria seeks. The incorporation of AI and blockchain ensures we retain key operational elements while continually progressing towards development.'
