Igbochukwu Foundation Inaugurates Interim Council to Revive Cultural Identity and Tackle Regional Challenges

The Igbochukwu Foundation has officially launched its Interim National Executive Council in Anambra State, aiming to restore the core values of excellence, hard work, and unity among the Igbo people while addressing perceived existential threats and mass migration.

The newly established Igbochukwu Foundation has formally inaugurated its Interim National Executive Council in Anambra State, tasking the leadership with revitalizing traditional Igbo values characterized by diligence, solidarity, and high standards. The rollout ceremony took place over the weekend at Obu Gad within Enugwu Aguleri, located in the Anambra East Local Government Area.

Dr. Chike Obidigbo, the convener and a notable elder statesman, explained during the launch event that the organization was established to safeguard the welfare and cohesion of the Igbo population amidst mounting socio-political and economic pressures. According to the leadership, these challenges stem from unfavorable federal policies and internal socio-economic factors driving a massive brain drain and outward migration from the eastern region.

"Igbochukwu Foundation has come as new way to rekindle the Igbo spirit of excellence founded on sound moral principles and dependence on God as the great artificer," Dr. Obidigbo stated. He further noted that without proactive interventions, the cultural identity of the region faces severe erosion, prompting patriotic citizens to shift from mere grievances to constructive dialogue and practical solutions.

What historical challenges led to the formation of the group?

Tracing the background of the region's socio-economic struggles, Dr. Obidigbo highlighted that systematic discrimination against the Igbo people intensified following the country's independence from Britain on October 1, 1960. These tensions subsequently escalated into the Nigerian Civil War, leaving deep structural scars that influenced subsequent national policies.

Rather than building resilience from the lessons of the post-war era, leadership figures noted that many citizens abandoned traditional communal norms, accelerating a diaspora movement away from the Igbo heartland. The newly inaugurated council aims to serve as an intellectual platform and cultural compass to reverse these trends and foster value re-orientation.

Who leads the new council?

The climax of the weekend assembly was the official swearing-in of the Interim National Executive Council, headed by His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. R. C. Opoko, JP, who assumed office as the President General.

In his acceptance address, Archbishop Opoko articulated the core mission of the foundation, pledging a peaceful and unwavering commitment to advancing the interests of Ndigbo. He emphasized that the cultural heritage and lifestyle of the people remain deeply anchored in spiritual principles attributed to the Supreme Creator, Chukwu Okike Abiama.
