The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has temporarily removed senior officials responsible for the Lagos-Seme border commands from their posts. This action stems from accusations of misconduct, specifically allegations of extortion, that have surfaced online concerning immigration officers operating in that area.
In a statement released on Friday, April 10, the agency's spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, confirmed the suspensions. He indicated that the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, ordered the immediate relief of the Comptrollers in charge of the affected commands. These suspensions are in effect pending the full outcome of an investigation into the reported incidents.
The spokesperson conveyed Comptroller-General Nandap's strong disapproval of the alleged actions. She described the reported behaviours as "unacceptable" and a clear breach of the NIS's fundamental principles, ethical standards, and operational guidelines.
Akinlabi assured the public that the NIS is committed to a thorough investigation. The probe aims to identify all personnel implicated in the alleged misconduct and ensure that "appropriate disciplinary measures are applied with immediate effect" to any officers found culpable.
