State television in North Korea has aired footage of Kim Jong Un personally operating a mobile, nuclear-capable multiple rocket launcher during a military event in the capital, Pyongyang.
The display included 600mm-caliber rocket systems systematically organized in a public square, complemented by numerous launch vehicles arranged in neat rows. Each transporter, designed with four axles, carries five rocket tubes. In the broadcast, images showed Kim disembarking from one of the vehicles and later grinning while seated at the controls.
As reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim "personally maneuvered a launcher vehicle to inspect the armaments emblematic of absolute strength" ahead of the forthcoming Ninth Party Congress.
Kim characterized the 600mm rockets as possessing capabilities similar to short-range ballistic missiles, asserting that they are significantly larger than many conventional systems. He also noted that these weapons integrate artificial intelligence within their guidance mechanisms.
According to statements attributed to him by KCNA, "No other countries possess such a weapon system," stating it has revolutionized the role and concept of artillery in the context of modern warfare.
This event occurs as North Korea gears up for a significant gathering of its ruling party, a phase typically characterized by increased propaganda efforts and military showcases. Historically, Pyongyang has leveraged such political events to spotlight newly developed weaponry.
Further stressing the capabilities of the 600mm rocket system, KCNA indicated that it can target sites throughout South Korea and be prepared to carry tactical nuclear warheads.
Regional animosities continue to escalate, particularly between North Korea and its southern neighbor, which benefits from robust U.S. military support. Estimates suggest North Korea maintains approximately 50 nuclear warheads and possesses sufficient fissile material to increase this arsenal. Alongside its artillery, North Korea operates a variety of delivery mechanisms ranging from regional short-range missiles to intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach U.S. territory.
A 2020 analytic report by the RAND Corporation warned that North Korea's multitude of conventional artillery positioned close to South Korean urban areas could inflict severe casualties swiftly if employed against civilian targets.
During the ceremony, which took place nearby Pyongyang's April 25 House of Culture, bright red banners celebrating the upcoming Ninth Party Congress adorned the military displays. Kim hinted at forthcoming announcements regarding enhancements in the nation’s defense strategies, urging developers and munitions staff to elevate their work within the party's strategic framework.
