Kwankwaso Alleges Tinubu Postponed Tax Enforcement to Safeguard 2027 Electoral Prospects

National Democratic Congress vice-presidential hopeful Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration is withholding the enforcement of new tax laws to dodge political backlash ahead of the 2027 elections. Speaking in Dutse, Kwankwaso cautioned citizens that a victory for the ruling party would lead to aggressive taxation.

During the inauguration of the National Democratic Congress National Democratic Congress campaign council in Jigawa State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso stated that the Federal Government has intentionally suspended the rollout of newly enacted tax legislation out of concern for the upcoming 2027 general elections. The event took place in Dutse, the state capital, where the prominent politician addressed party loyalists and supporters.

According to the former Kano State governor, the necessary legislative processes for the tax measures have already been concluded, yet the administration remains hesitant to enforce them due to anticipated political repercussions.

What did Kwankwaso allege regarding the tax implementation?

Kwankwaso asserted that the government is fully aware of the unpopular nature of the fiscal policies and is deliberately shielding voters from the financial burden until after the ballot.

"The bill has been passed into law, but the Federal Government is now afraid of losing the election. That is why it has delayed the collection," Kwankwaso declared during his address.

He further cautioned the electorate that a renewed mandate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) would unleash severe economic hardship through aggressive revenue drives.

"As soon as they get a second chance, God forbid, Nigerians will suffer from different kinds of tax collection. They will start going from house to house, checking even under your bed to collect taxes," he warned.

Furthermore, the opposition figure criticized the legislative handling of the policy, claiming that key leaders intentionally distanced themselves from presiding over the controversial proceedings.

"The worst part of it is that the session for the approval of the tax bill was chaired by one of us from Kano. Even the Senate President intentionally refused to attend because he did not want to be part of it," he alleged.

In his concluding remarks, Kwankwaso presented his party as a viable alternative for the populace, promising relief from heavy fiscal burdens alongside targeted social investments.

"NDC is there for Nigerians, when you give us your mandate we will cancel all such unnecessary taxes, we will provide quality education and sponsor your child’s education," he assured.

He ultimately urged the electorate to reject the ruling party at the polls, arguing that extending their tenure would further jeopardize the country's collective future.
