The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Lagos State Chapter has officially refuted claims concerning the removal of its chairman, deeming the action unconstitutional and legally void.

In a press release issued on April 18, 2026, the association noted its awareness of an "announcement by a group of individuals claiming to have removed him from office."

The association unequivocally rejected this move, stating, "this action is not only unlawful but also constitutes a clear violation of the Constitution of the Nigerian Medical Association, which provides explicit guidelines and due process for the election, tenure, and, where necessary, removal of elected officers."

It was emphasized that the established due process was not followed at any point, with the statement adding, "At no point were these constitutional provisions observed or complied with by the individuals involved."

Characterizing the action as baseless and lacking legal standing, the association described the purported removal as "an exercise in futility, lacking any legal foundation, constitutional validity, or institutional recognition."

"It is therefore null, void, and incapable of producing any lawful consequence within the framework of the Association," the statement continued.

The Lagos NMA reaffirmed the chairman's legitimate position, stating, "The Chairman was duly elected by the general membership of the Association and remains the legitimate office holder."

It issued a warning against any attempts to disrupt the chairman's mandate through "irregular and unauthorized means," declaring such actions as "null, void, and of no effect."

The association advised its members and the public to disregard any directives issued by unauthorized individuals or groups.

Furthermore, it revealed that measures are being implemented to address the situation, including "appropriate steps, including legal action where necessary, are being taken to address this breach and to preserve the integrity of the Association."

Appealing for composure, the association urged members to remain focused on the NMA's primary objectives, adding, "We call on all members to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on the core objectives of the Association."

The association maintained its resolve, stating, "The Nigerian Medical Association (Lagos State Chapter) will not be distracted from its mission by actions that threaten its unity and constitutional order."

The press release was endorsed by Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed, who serves as the Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter.
