A passenger who sustained severe injuries during Friday's vehicular accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has passed away while receiving medical care at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital situated in Sagamu, Ogun State. The fatality was officially verified by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency on Saturday through an updated operational briefing.
The update was detailed in an official assessment filed by the TRACE unit commander stationed in Saapade, Commander Oridota P.O., following a follow-up assessment visit to the medical facility on Saturday morning. The agency's public relations officer, Akinbiyi Babatunde, distributed the document to media representatives.
While the official briefing confirmed the fatality, it withheld specific personal details regarding the deceased individual, omitting their name, age, and gender.
According to the documentation, medical administrators at the teaching hospital formally notified the visiting traffic agency officials of the passenger's death during their Saturday morning inspection.
This unfortunate development shifts the casualty figures of the incident, which initially left 13 individuals with varying degrees of injury on Friday without any immediate fatalities documented in the preliminary traffic assessment.
Quoting directly from the official TRACE update, the agency noted, "In the course of embarking on post crash visit to OOUTH sagamu this morning, it was announced by the hospital management that the only passenger in critical condition that was taken to OOUTH has passed on."
The mishap involved a commercial Mazda commuter vehicle conveying a total of 18 occupants. Initial investigations by TRACE revealed that the transport vehicle lost control after experiencing a sudden tyre blowout, subsequently crashing forcefully into a concrete median divider along the Lagos-bound corridor of the major highway.
At the time of the crash, safety operatives reported that the 13 injured victims consisted of two adult males, eight adult females, and three minors. These casualties were promptly distributed across three separate medical facilities for urgent intervention: one critical patient was admitted to the teaching facility in Sagamu, nine individuals were rushed to Divine Hospital located in Ogere, and three others received treatment at the Isara General Hospital.
