Authorities in Libya have commenced an inquiry into the assassination of Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the former ruler Muammar Gaddafi, in the town of Zintan.
On Wednesday, February 4, the Libyan public prosecutor's office released a statement indicating that forensic teams had been dispatched to Zintan, where Seif al-Islam met his demise. The office assured the public that efforts are underway to locate and apprehend those behind the shooting.
According to the prosecutor's office, the victim succumbed to gunshot wounds and emphasized that investigators are looking to converse with witnesses or anyone who could provide insights regarding the event.
Marcel Ceccaldi, Seif al-Islam's lawyer, informed AFP that an unidentified group of four armed individuals attacked his client’s home in Zintan on Tuesday, leading to his death.
Since the NATO-backed revolt in 2011 that resulted in Muammar Gaddafi’s overthrow and execution, Libya has been marred by instability. The nation continues to experience a division in political governance and ongoing insecurity.
Libya remains split between a UN-supported government in Tripoli and a competing authority in the east backed by military leader Khalifa Haftar. To date, neither governing body has publicly addressed the circumstances surrounding Seif al-Islam's killing.
The lone public response has emerged from Moussa al-Kouni, the vice-president of Libya's Presidential Council for the Fezzan region.
Al-Kouni publicly condemned the act, stating, "No to political assassinations, no to achieving demands by force, and no to violence as a language or a means of expression," via post on X.
