Lilian Nneji, a prominent gospel music minister, has carved out a distinctive niche for herself in the industry through her energetic ministrations, unique musical style, and unwavering commitment to spreading the gospel. In a recent interview with SEYI SOKOYA, she shared insights into her musical journey, sources of inspiration, and perspectives on the evolving gospel music landscape.
When asked how her musical identity evolved, Lilian recalled that as a young girl, she always harboured the desire to see gospel music played at virtually every event. She noted that before now, secular music often dominated Christian parties, but today that narrative has changed significantly because gospel music has evolved tremendously. She expressed gratitude for the growing acceptance of gospel music across celebrations and social gatherings, attributing this shift to divine inspiration and her Christian faith.
Regarding what sustains her tremendous energy during performances, Lilian cited the biblical verse, 'The joy of the Lord is my strength.' She explained that her ministrations are not merely about physical energy but are expressions of the joy, grace, and strength she receives from God. Her consistent joy is what enables her to draw strength from the Almighty.
On the increasing diversity within the gospel music industry, where ministers adopt different styles and approaches, Lilian emphasised that God has graced everyone differently. She argued that individuals should be allowed to manifest according to the level of grace received from Him. She stressed that people cannot all sound the same, and God deliberately made them unique. Rather than criticising one another's styles, artists should appreciate the diversity of gifts and focus on glorifying God through their individual talents.
To distinguish genuine gospel music from other forms, Lilian pointed to the biblical principle, 'By their fruits you shall know them.' She believes the Spirit of God within each artist is sufficient to discern what is true and genuine. Beyond sound, presentation or style, the message, motive, and fruit of the music remain paramount. Gospel music should ultimately point people toward God and reflect the truth of His Word.
Reflecting on her journey from early beginnings to her current prominence, Lilian attributed everything to God, saying, 'To God be all the glory! It has been God all the way.' She expressed deep appreciation for His faithfulness, grace, and sustaining power throughout her career.
Her greatest challenge before attaining prominence was financial. She had to work harder, save more, and make sacrifices to record and promote her music. Despite the difficulties, she remained determined and committed to the vision God had given her, eventually overcoming those obstacles through hard work, perseverance, and divine help.
Fulfillment, she said, comes not from how far she has come but from how much more God wants to accomplish through her. Her focus remains on reaching more people and winning more souls for the Lord.
Regarding factionalism within the gospel music circle, Lilian declared that she belongs to Jesus alone. She stated that her allegiance is to Christ, and no other group is necessary. Her identity lies in her relationship with Jesus.
On addressing rivalry and confrontation among gospel musicians, Lilian urged everyone to stay on the track God has committed into their hands. She acknowledged that such issues unfortunately exist but insisted there is no reason for them since there is nothing called 'similar anointing.' Each person has a unique assignment and grace from God. If artists concentrate on their individual assignments and remain committed to what God has called them to do, unnecessary rivalry will diminish.
When asked about her closest friends, mentors, and role models, Lilian said she is comfortable with everyone but looks unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of her faith. He remains her perfect example, and she constantly learns from Him.
For song inspiration, Lilian draws from the Word of God, her Christian life, and her personal journey of faith. The experiences, lessons, and revelations she receives in her relationship with God often find expression in her compositions. She aims for her music to communicate God's truth and encourage people in their walk with Him.
Outside the pulpit and music stage, Lilian is an ordained Assistant Pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), a wife to a pastor of an RCCG church, an entrepreneur, a mother, and a teacher of the Word of God. Beyond music, she is deeply committed to her family, ministry, business, and the work of God.
On managing stress associated with performances, Lilian revealed that people often perceive gospel musicians as being on stage 24 hours a day, which is far from reality. She explained that she rests whenever she can and constantly carries out routine health checks, monitors her blood pressure closely, and has personal doctors attending to her well-being. She emphasised that ministry is important, but so is taking care of one's health.
Her new project, titled 'Highly Favoured,' is a collection of different genres designed to appeal to various generations. She noted that there is a song for everyone on the album, with the goal of eliminating sorrow from people's lives as they listen. She hopes listeners will draw strength, encouragement, and hope from the album, which is loaded with content meant to bless lives, strengthen faith, and bring people closer to God.
Looking ahead, Lilian told fans they should expect more songs that will bless their souls and direct their hearts toward God. She stated firmly that she is not stopping anytime soon and intends to continue producing music that ministers to people, strengthens their faith, and brings glory to God.
By the grace of God, there is still much more to come from Lilian Nneji in the years ahead.
