A minister from Malaysia has become the subject of ridicule following his assertion that stress from work could drive individuals toward homosexuality.
The spotlight on Malaysia's LGBTQ community intensified two weeks ago when both police and religious authorities responded to complaints from a sultan and Islamist politicians regarding a camping retreat that allegedly promoted an LGBTQ lifestyle.
On Tuesday, January 27, Religious Affairs Minister Zulkifli Hasan remarked that various factors, including work-related stress, were purportedly influencing people to adopt sexual orientations outside of heterosexual norms.
In a written response to lawmaker Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff from the opposition Islamist party PAS, Zulkifli stated, "Societal influence, sexual experiences, work stress, and other personal factors are part of this category of possible causes."
Referencing a study conducted by “Sulaiman et al” in 2017, the minister claimed that a mixture of such elements could lead to an increase in LGBTQ behaviors.
Zulkifli's comments prompted many to ridicule him and question the reasoning behind his statements.
