Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been named the new Supreme Leader of Iran as per information circulating in Israeli media outlets.

He was chosen as the successor to his father by Iran’s Assembly of Experts, which oversees the Supreme Leader.

Ayatollah Khamenei, who held power for 36 years, was killed during coordinated strikes by US and Israeli forces on February 28 at his residence. In the attack, his family members, including his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter, also lost their lives.

His spouse, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, later died from injuries she sustained during the strikes.

Iranian authorities announced that Khamenei would be interred in Mashhad, and a significant farewell ceremony is planned to take place in Tehran, according to a statement issued by the Revolutionary Guards via Telegram.

The strikes, referred to as 'Operation Epic Fury', were initiated following stalled discussions regarding Iran's nuclear program and allegations that the nation had restarted its nuclear endeavors. The offensives affected various cities in Iran, including Tehran, resulting in over 700 reported fatalities.

In retaliation for the assaults, Iran launched missiles targeting several Gulf states, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Bahrain.

The situation in the Middle East remains tense as Iran pledges to respond for the death of its Supreme Leader. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that it is "too late" for Iran to pursue negotiations to avoid conflict.
