Motor Assistant Killed, Driver Injured in Lagos Traffic Incidents

A motor assistant lost his life while a motorist sustained injuries following three separate road incidents across Lagos State, which involved vehicular collisions and a stalled truck. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency managed the emergencies in Epe, Maryland, and Mushin.

A motor assistant has lost his life, and a motorist sustained injuries following three distinct emergency operations involving vehicular crashes and a stalled heavy-duty vehicle in Lagos State. The incidents took place at Oke-Oso in Epe, the Odo-Iyalaro Bridge leading toward Maryland, and Olosha in Mushin during overnight and early morning hours.

According to an official statement by LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the first emergency began at approximately 7:58 pm when a collision occurred between two cars on the Odo-Iyalaro Bridge heading inward Maryland. The vehicles involved were a Toyota Camry bearing registration number AGL-70HU and a Toyota Venza with registration number FST-893KF. Investigators found that the Venza had parked alongside the road after running out of fuel before the Camry crashed into its rear. Authorities suspected that the driver of the Camry was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. Although fatalities were avoided, the Camry driver suffered injuries and received immediate stabilization from LASEMA paramedics alongside the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being transported to the Trauma Centre. Both automobiles were subsequently towed to the Area F Police Station.

What happened during the Mushin obstruction?

In a second incident at Olosha, Mushin, the agency deployed its Eagle Response Team at roughly 10:36 pm after a heavy truck obstructed traffic flow. Responders located a HOWO truck with registration number JJJ-293XZ stranded due to a deteriorated portion of the asphalt, blocking roughly 60 percent of the thoroughfare. No injuries were reported from this disruption. Officials immediately implemented traffic diversion protocols while mobilizing the agency's heavy-duty recovery asset, known as the Super Metro, to clear the obstruction. The truck was successfully relocated to a designated lay-by, restoring normal traffic movement.

How did the fatal Epe crash occur?

A third emergency at Oke-Oso along the Itokin axis in Epe proved fatal for a motor assistant. The Epe-stationed Whales Response Team was mobilized at about 6:19 am following a crash involving two granite-laden tipper trucks. Inquiries revealed that one of the tippers, registered as ABG-226XB, suffered a sudden brake failure, went out of control, and grazed the second vehicle. The impact threw the motor assistant from the first truck, resulting in fatal injuries upon landing. "The remains of the deceased adult male were recovered, bagged and handed over to the Federal Road Safety Corps," the agency's statement confirmed. Both tippers were cleared from the location and moved to the FRSC facility.

Following these events, LASEMA extended condolences to the family of the deceased while advising motorists to regularly inspect their vehicle roadworthiness, refrain from drinking and driving, and strictly adhere to highway codes. The agency reiterated its readiness to tackle emergencies statewide and encouraged residents to report distress situations via its emergency telephone lines.
