The Coalition of Nigerian Muslim Women has appealed to Media Trust Group to partner with them in advocating for the rights of Muslim women to wear the hijab without experiencing any form of harassment.
During a courtesy visit to Media Trust Group in Abuja on Thursday, Muinah Tauheed, who leads the Abuja Muslim Forum, emphasized the importance of collaboration with media organizations to enhance advocacy on matters affecting both the private and public lives of Nigerian Muslim women.
Tauheed highlighted that the upcoming World Hijab Day, set for February 1, will be commemorated in Abuja through a series of activities, which will include outreach to schools and media outlets, a press briefing, a public lecture, and a hijab awareness event.
She noted that this annual observance is aimed at increasing awareness about the rights of Muslim women and girls in wearing the hijab, as well as addressing the discrimination they face.
The coalition has been marking World Hijab Day consistently since 2014, with the 2026 event marking its 12th anniversary. This year’s theme, "Unity in Hijab," seeks to promote solidarity, respect, and inclusivity while challenging existing stereotypes.
In response, Hamza Idris, the Deputy Editorial Director and Chairman of the Editorial Board at Daily Trust, assured the coalition of continuous support from Media Trust Group on behalf of the organization’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Ahmed I. Shekarau. He reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with the coalition to raise awareness about the significance of the hijab.
